Welcome to our class page!
Class Teacher: Mr Brown
Teaching Assistant: Miss Hardiment
1:1 Teaching Assistant: Mrs Reed
Welcome back after the summer break – myself, Miss Hardiment and Mrs Reed hope that you and your children had a relaxing time away from school, whatever you did and wherever you went.
The first half term of the 2018-19 academic year will last for 6 full weeks and will finish on Friday 19th October. We will return for Autumn term 2 on Monday 29th October.
In English, we will write stories based on the Ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, as part of the Talk for Writing programme. Later in the half term, we will create instruction texts and even a spot of poetry!
In Maths, we will focus on place value (finding 10 more or less than a given number, working up to 1000) as well as addition and subtraction (mental and written calculations, missing number problems, estimation and using the inverse to check answers). We will also practice our times tables, with a special focus on 4x, 8x, 50x and 100x.
Science will see us investigate plants by looking at the parts, functions and life cycles of flowering plants, and learning how to record and represent data gained from experiments.
In History, we will focus on the Ancient Greeks, undertaking a study of Greek life, achievements and their influence on the Western world.
PE this term covers the Olympic Games, and will take place outside on Wednesday afternoons; please ensure that your children arrive at school on Monday mornings with their full PE kit.
In Art, we will look at the work of the American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who created beautiful paintings of plants and flowers, which fits nicely with our Science topic.
In DT, we will create an Archimedes Screw, a mechanism for transporting water which was named after the renowned Greek mathematician who designed it.
This half term, Mrs Baker will be delivering PSHE and RE on Tuesday afternoons; Forest School for Year 3 will begin in Autumn term 2.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning that you would like to discuss with me, please aim to come and speak to me either before 8.30 in the morning, or at the end of the school day. Between 8.30 and 8.45 every morning, all teaching staff at Old Buckenham have a meeting with their teaching assistants, which is a crucial opportunity to discuss learning for the day and to decide on strategies to support specific children. These meetings also happen in Year 3 and are important to make sure we are supporting children in the right ways. As far as you can, please avoid coming to see me during this time.
Thank you for your co-operation and support in your child’s learning.
