At Old Buckenham Primary School, Physical Education plays an important part in the physical, mental and social development of the child. All children are given opportunities to participate in a broad, balanced programme to develop key skills, in line with National Curriculum requirements. These skills are taught via a wide range of sports including football, netball, cricket, tennis and many more.
Our pupils are continuously encouraged to stay active and healthy throughout the school day and beyond. Pupils have two hours of physical activity per week through which we develop the physical literacy skills as set out in the National Curriculum. Our offer see’s 1 hour of targeted PE delivery alongside 15 minutes of daily mile or active classroom sessions everyday. In the summer term of Year 3, children begin weekly swimming lessons and this opportunity is continuously provided for those children in years 4, 5 and 6 who haven’t yet achieved their 25m badge. We aim for all pupils leaving the school to be able to swim at least 25m – July 2018 24/31, July 2019 24/29 children left our school being able to swim at least this distance. No data was available for July 2020 due to Covid-19 closures.
At OBPS all pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of tournaments through our SNSSP and links with Active Norfolk School games (currently Virtual), as well as sports festivals ran by different high schools in the SET. We work with Chance 2 Shine to improve the pupil’s skills in striking and fielding through cricket. We are also able to provide a Dance club opportunity for multiple year groups through a trained dance professional.
Our aim is to allow all children to flourish and enjoy physical education success at their own level and value core life skills such as teamwork and resilience.
