Hedgehog Class (Year 1)

Welcome to Hedgehogs!

The Hedgehogs Team:

In Hedgehog class, the children work in ways that will keep them focused and engaged. The children can access a variety of independent learning opportunities throughout the day, using different resources and activities that are available around the classroom. During more focused learning, for example Reading, Writing and Maths the children work in  mixed groups with an adult to support them if needed.

We promote a lot of independence in class to support and enhance the children’s life skills as they grow and the children are always busy with lots of independent learning through our ‘Continuous Enhanced Provision’.  Each week the children have new challenges in lots of areas of our classroom and outside including: Phonics, Magic Maths, Finger Gym, Role Play, Tuff Spot, Reading Corner and Construction. We work in small groups at a time with an adult while the other children have ‘challenge time’ exploring these areas.  The children in Hedgehogs class are also very fortunate to have access to the wonderful outside area to enjoy during ‘challenge time’.

Here is our timetable for each week so you can see what the children will be doing each day.

Forest school happens every other half term.  We are lucky that it is our turn for the first half of the Autumn term.  Therefore Topic on a Wednesday is actually Forest school until the end of October, so children will need to be in their Forest school kit when coming to school on a Wednesday.  This includes normal school uniform for the top half and jogging bottoms or similar for their legs (no jeans.)  Please remember wellies and waterproofs to also bring in a bag to change into after lunch if needed.

P.E is on a Thursday afternoon and children will also need to come to school in their P.E kits on this day every week too.  Please send in a spare pair of shoes too so we can change shoes if it is wet or muddy.

  • Across the year we will be working to reliably use and spell the Key Stage 1 common exception words – these are words which are exceptions to spelling pattern or phonics rules that may come up in our writing. If your child is not yet confident with the Reception word list please give those words some extra time and attention. KS1 word list and phonemes
  • Reading records are collected in and checked on Thursday, and will be returned on Monday. Returned reading books are quarantined before going back into our class library. We will try to ensure children have additional books as hey will be changed less frequently – please feel free to read other books to supplement this.
  • Spelling Shed and Times Table Rock Stars Log in details will be glued in your child’s reading record.

Children’s News Day  News Timetable Autumn 1 2020

We encourage children to bring in something from home which they can talk about to the class as their news.  This might be photos from a day out, something they have made that they are proud of or a family celebration.  Anything which is important to them which they can talk about.  We have had presentations sent in via email before so that we can show the class on the interactive screen.  We would ask that news it not bringing toys or teddies into school but rather something the child can talk about which might be linked also to their learning.
